Recently I’ve been focused on the balance between my daily earthly life and the eternal perspective that often slips quietly into the background. Our schedules are filled with tasks, meetings, and plans for upcoming events—birthdays, work deadlines, social commitments—and these rightly require our attention. Yet, in the midst of these preparations, I find myself contemplating whether I dedicate even a small portion of my thoughts to what lies beyond this life.

There is a powerful story in the Bible about a man whose thoughts turned to eternity in the final moments of his life. This man was a thief, crucified alongside Jesus at Golgotha. As he hung on the cross, facing the reality of death, he saw and heard Jesus respond with grace and compassion to those around Him. In that moment, the thief recognized his own guilt and the innocence of Jesus.

With his last breaths, he turned to Jesus and said, “Remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” In an instant, Jesus responded with the profound promise: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”

This story is a remarkable testament to God’s mercy and the power of faith, even at the very end of life. It reminds us that it is never too late to turn to Jesus. The thief’s final act of faith secured for him the promise of eternal life, showing that salvation is a gift of grace, not earned by works, but freely given to those who believe.

Earthly events, though sometimes important and meaningful, are always fleeting. Eternity, by contrast, stretches far beyond the horizon of time. Giving thought to our eternity—our spiritual well-being, the legacy of our actions, the deeper purpose that guides our lives—grounds us in a peace and direction that no temporary event can provide. Just think about it today.

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” – Hebrews 9:27
