Have you ever sat quietly and allowed your mind to wander down the branching paths of your life, imagining what might have happened if you had made just one different choice? It’s a fascinating exercise, a kind of mental time travel. One decision can ripple outward in ways we can hardly predict.

Perhaps if you had pursued a different career, met a different friend, or taken a chance you avoided, your world would look much different today. When we reflect on these alternate realities, we often feel a mixture of wonder and curiosity, sometimes even regret or relief.

Each hypothetical path is like a book never read, a story that exists only in fragments in our imagination. Yet there’s a strange comfort in this kind of thought experiment: it reminds us that our lives are created not just from the choices we made, but also from the infinite possibilities we left unexplored.

Dwelling too long in the world of what-ifs can trap us in nostalgia or doubt, but brief visits there can also help us appreciate the path we are on. The roads we didn’t take may remain mysterious, but they illuminate, in their absence, the life we’ve built with the choices we did make. It’s probably best to drift back to the present and ground yourself there to follow God’s plan for your life.

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…” – Philippians 3:13-14
