Each morning, if God wills it, we wake up with two things to accomplish. We have needs, the things we must do to get through the day. And we have plans, the things we hope to do with the time we are given.
Because of that, our days start to look the same. We wake at the same time, do the same tasks, sit in the same places. There is comfort in this. A routine gives our day shape and makes life steady. But there is a cost too. When every day is the same, we can stop paying attention to it.
This question matters: what is your plan today? Nobody is expecting you to create a big new life goal, but think about this. Are you choosing how you spend today, or are you just repeating yesterday because it’s easier? A routine you choose feels much different from a routine you just fall into.
You don’t have to change everything to change your routine. You can do the same things, but do them with more purpose. Make breakfast with care instead of rushing. Use an errand to speak kindly to someone. Take a few minutes to pray or think instead of just moving to the next task. Small changes in attention can change your entire day.
So tomorrow morning, pause before the day starts. Name one thing you need to do and one thing you want to do. Then do one of them a little more deliberately than you did yesterday. If you do that, you aren’t throwing away your routine. You’ll be waking up inside of it with a little more purpose. That can only help you and everyone around you.
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time.” – Ephesians 5:15-16
