The values that built the United States—freedom, equality, and the pursuit of opportunity—stand at the very heart of our nation’s story. From the moment the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago, these ideals have guided the ambitions and sacrifices of generations. Yet, as we celebrate this historic milestone, there is growing concern that these foundational principles are under threat.

Today, the country faces deep political polarization, mistrust in institutions, and challenges to civil discourse. Freedom of expression and the right to disagree peacefully, once seen as core strengths, are increasingly strained by extremism and division. Equality, a value that inspired struggles for civil rights, voting rights, and social progress, remains an unfinished promise in a time of widening gaps in wealth, access, and opportunity.

Even as we honor the anniversary of the nation’s founding, we are reminded that values are not preserved automatically. They must be defended, renewed, and lived out in our daily lives. Recommitting to the principles of liberty, justice, and unity is essential if future generations are to inherit a country as resilient and hopeful as the one that began in 1776.

The celebration of this landmark year is not only a call to reflection, but also a challenge: to ensure that the core ideals that built the United States remain strong for the next 250 years.
