You just might be one of the luckiest people who has ever lived.
If you have a roof over your head and four walls to protect you from the weather, you have what would have been considered unattainable for most of human history. For thousands of years, a dry, secure shelter wasn’t a given. It was a dream and usually only for the rich.
Think about this: You can walk into a room, turn a knob, and clean water flows out. Cold when you want it cold. Hot when you want it hot. For almost every person who came before us, that alone would have been an unbelievable miracle. No hauling buckets from a river, no wondering if it was safe to drink.
And if it is too hot outside, or too cold, you walk over to a little device on the wall and touch it. With a quiet hum, the temperature inside becomes perfect. In the dead of summer, you have winter in your living room. In the dead of winter, you have summer. Any king or emperor in history would have called that magic.
We carry entire libraries in our pockets and speak to distant voices through glass. We have light after sunset, and watch a beating heart from outside the chest. We live surrounded by what our ancestors would have called miracles, but we call it ordinary. All these things sure make our lives easy and convenient. All these “miracles” give us all time to simply live. Think about that and be grateful.
