You’ll only be this “you” once. It’s more than your age. It’s what you know now, what you can still do easily, who’s still here with you, and what you’ve finally stopped caring about. You were stronger before. You may be wiser later. But you will never have this exact view of the world again. That’s why it matters so much.
Doing what makes you happy isn’t selfish. It helps you see clearly. It doesn’t mean chasing a good feeling all the time, and it doesn’t mean dropping all your duties. It means noticing what makes you feel alive and like yourself. The walk you want to take, the call you want to make, the project you keep thinking about, the quiet morning doing nothing at all. Give those things real time in your day, not just the minutes that are left over.
Stop waiting for permission. Many of us carry a crowd in our heads. Old bosses, parents, friends, neighbors, all voting on whether we are allowed to want what we want. The truth is, the people whose approval you’re waiting for are usually too busy with their own worries to notice. You don’t need everyone to agree to start living more like yourself.
Stop waiting for the right time. The right time is a story we tell ourselves to feel safe. When money is perfect, when the house is quiet, when we feel fully ready and confident. That time never comes because life keeps moving. There will always be a reason to wait one more month or one more year. The window is open now. It is not perfect and a little drafty, but it is open.
So do something today, in a smaller way than you imagined. You don’t need a big announcement. Just make one small choice that honors the age you are right now. Wear the thing. Take the trip. Learn what you thought you were too late for. Say ‘no’ to what drains you so you can say ‘yes’ to what gives you life. You don’t have to earn happiness first. You just have to allow it while you’re still here to feel it. To enjoy it.
